BV-XB1 is a high resolution imaging system which combines a high resolution camera with 1920 x 1200 pixels, plus image acquisition software developed for bioimaging experiments.
The system includes ESTM-9, which is equipped with external camera control, external illumination control, pulse outputs, analog outputs, and analog inputs recording functionality. By connecting external equipment such as a light source, electrical stimulator, and amplifiers, ESTM-9 synchronizes image acquisition with inputs/outputs of external equipment.
In combination with Brainvision’s fluorescence macroscope, it is possible to construct a wide-field / high resolution / high S/N ratio fluorescence imaging system.
XB1 Camera Head
The dark noise of the CMOS sensor used in the XB1CM camera head is as low as that of CCD sensors, and it is possible to capture images at relatively high frame rates. Due to this combination of low noise and relatively high speed, XB1CM is suitable for low light level bioimaging applications, such as calcium imaging, imaging using fluorescent proteins such as GCaMP/FRET, and flavoprotein intrinsic imaging.
High Resolution, Large Sensor and Wide Field of View
Spatial resolution: 1920×1200 pixels, sensor size:11.3mmx7.1mm
Total Magnification of Macroscope |
Field of View |
---|---|
0.63x | 17.9mm x 11.2mm |
1.0x | 11.3mm x 7.1mm |
1.6x | 7.1mm x 4.4mm |
Wide Dynamic Range and Low Dark Noise
A large well capacity of about 32ke- results in greater dynamic range than CCD sensors, and low dark noise comparable to a CCD camera. It can be used for wide range of applications from low to medium light conditions.
Maximum frame rate and sensitivity can be changed by number of pixels and binning

(*1) Size of effective pixel will change, dependent on binning.
(*2) Size of effective sensor area and size of effective pixel will change, depending on selected number of pixels and binning.
ESTM-9
By connecting external equipment such as camera, light source, electrical stimulator, and amplifiers, ESTM-9 can synchronize image acquisition with inputs/outputs of external equipment.
Acquisition Control of External Camera
- Outputs frame timing pulses to external camera, or receives frame timing signals from external camera.
- Time-lapse acquisition control is also available.
Light Source Control
- Outputs signals to external light source in synchronization with camera control.
- Continuous, intermittent, or custom light pattern available.
Pulse Stimulator
- 4 channels of pulse stimulation can be controlled individually.
- Stimulation works with or without camera control.
- Continuous stimulation using free-run mode is also available.
Analog Signal Recording
- 2 channels of analog inputs.
- Pre-trigger, delayed-trigger, and multiple trigger source available.
Other Features
Turnkey System Ready for Immediate Use
The system consists of hardware/software specifically designed for high-speed fluorescence imaging, and the PC and monitor are included as standard equipment. Before use, calibration/setting/tuning is not necessary. The hardware connection is straightforward between components using cables, making it possible to acquire data immediately after setup.
Multi Camera System
By connecting multiple XB1CMs to PC, it is possible to operate as a fully synchronized multi camera system. Two images can be superimposed on monitor display so that user can overlap two images.
Time Lapse Imaging
BV-XB1 can capture phenomenon that changes in a few minutes up to several hours, intermittently. Because illumination light is turned on only at the time of image acquisition, phototoxic effects to sample are minimized, and a stable baseline can be acquired.

Software
Acquisition/Analysis Software (BV Workbench)
BV Workbench is the image acquisition software that controls BV-XB1 imaging system. In addition to image acquisition and control of inputs and outputs of the imaging system, analysis functions including movie playback, wave display, filter functions, etc…are also included. BV Workbench has an intuitive user interface that is easily operated with the use of a mouse.
